AMICU was founded in 1991 by a group of intensive care consultants in Merseyside and Cheshire to provide both an educational and business forum for all clinicians practising, training in, or with an interest in, intensive care medicine within the Mersey region, North West England and North Wales.
Members of professions allied to medicine have always been welcome.
The inaugural meeting was convened on 6 Dec 1991, at which AMICU's constitution was approved, and meetings continue to be held on a quarterly basis.
Since 1993, one meeting each year has been a joint meeting with the Association of North West Intensive Care Units (ANWICU).
The annual Trainees' Prize meeting has been held since 1996.
