This year's Annual BACCN Conference will take place in Southport, 13--14 Sept 2010 

Members only section

• Membership of AMICU is open to all clinicians practising, or with an interest in, intensive care medicine within the Mersey deanery, north west England and north Wales. Members of professions allied to medicine are also welcome. Current membership is about 65.

• To become a member of AMICU please complete a standing order mandate for the small annual subscription.

• The Mersey Deanery is associated with the University of Liverpool. It includes the whole of the county of Merseyside together with parts of the counties of Cheshire and Lancashire and parts of north Wales.

• Six Health Authorities (HAs) and twelve ICUs were included in this area: Liverpool, Sefton, North Cheshire, South Cheshire, Wirral and St. Helens & Knowsley. In April 2002 these 6 HAs were replaced by the Cheshire & Merseyside Strategic Health Authority (SHA).

• The population of Merseyside and Cheshire is about 2.4M and is governed by 14 Local Government Authorities. 

• In April 2002, the NHS underwent one of its regular reorganisations; Health Authorities and the NHS Regional Offices ceased to function and their role was taken over by PCTs, SHAs and Regional Government Offices. 

• Then, in July 2006, mergers of SHAs resulted in Cheshire & Merseyside becoming part of the new NHS North West  (Pop 6.8M).

• Close links exist with the more recently formed Association of North Western Intensive Care Units (ANWICU), covering the other deanery in the NHS North West, associated with the University of Manchester.

• Meetings are held four times per annum; AMICU acts as an Educational and Business Forum for its members. Meetings have been assessed as equivalent to 2 CEPD points. One meeting each year includes presentations for the Registrar Prize. There is a joint meeting of AMICU and ANWICU annually.

• Recognised by the relevant authorities, including The Cheshire and Mersey Critical Care Network, one of 29 critical care networks in England, as the body representing Intensive Care clinicians both in the Mersey deanery and the Mersey and Cheshire area of the NHS*.

Meetings

The minutes of most AMICU meetings, from the first meeting in December 1991 onwards, are available for downloading from here.

• Meetings are held quarterly, on a Friday, and begin at 1300 hrs with a buffet lunch followed by a lecture, tea break and then business meeting.
• Recognised for 2 CPD points (Royal College of Anaesthetists).
